What does a Signaling Line Circuit (SLC) do in addressable fire alarm systems?

It powers the notification appliances.

It senses smoke and heat.

It carries data between initiating devices and the control panel, enabling device addressing and supervision.

The Signaling Line Circuit provides the data path for addressable devices. It runs as a two‑wire loop from the control panel to every initiating device, and it is through this path that each device gets a unique address and communicates status back to the panel. The panel uses the SLC to poll devices, receive alarm or trouble signals, and monitor supervision so it knows exactly which device triggered an event and whether the device or wiring is functioning properly. This communication capability is what makes the system addressable. The SLC is not responsible for powering notification appliances (that’s the NAC circuit), nor does it sense smoke or heat itself (that’s done by the detectors). It’s also specifically for addressable systems, not limited to non-addressable installations.

It is used only in non-addressable systems.
